Top iPhone Games

The number of iPod touch and iPhone games has probably been multiplied by 10 since I started this list. I've only played a fraction of them, but these are my favorites

    Rolando

      Marketing budget... ;)

Rolando is probably the closest thing to a DS game on the iPhone in terms of production budget (and marketing). Great game that seems to borrow its main concepts and style from Loco Roco for the PSP. Of course, the PSP aint got no accelerometer, so arguably, the iPhone is the better platform!

    Galcon

    • Enable Flash to see this video

Galcon is a real time strategy game boiled down to its essense. Each round takes about 30-60 seconds, which is a perfect amount of time for a handheld game. compete with your enemies to capture planets. The bigger the planet, the faster it produces units.

This one has online play which is hella cool.

    Geocaching

WOOOOHAAAAW (this video is hilarious. Geocaching + angst)

Its almost hard to call Geocaching a game, and it isnt original to the iPhone. But it still works as far as Im concerned. Geocaching has been around for years. The concept is that you would go to the website (geocaching.com) look up cache locations, and use a handheld GPS to go out into the world and find them. Afterward, you return to the website and log your find.

Caches are generally full of worthless trinkets, and the concept is that you take one, and leave something else behind.

My description here is just the tip of the iceberg really, people make entire games out of a single cache, and at its best, the experience can be a fun, challenging outdoor activity that introduces you to little hidden spots that you would not have known existed...

The iPhone version of the experience is the most seamless to date. You can find nearby caches, read descriptions and log entries, and go navigate to the cache location all on the device wherever you are.

Even at its $10.00 price tag (steep for an iphone app), This is my favorite game on the iphone.

Would you still call it rolling when its a rectangle?

Great, and very well polished puzzle game... hard to describe, so just watch the vid.

    LineRider

Check this at about 1 minute in

LineRider was originally a flash experiment made by some student i think... you draw lines, and your little bobsledder will ride them... people come up with some pretty elaborate stuff

    Word Jong

    • Word Jong

Oddly, I can't find a video for this one...

Word Jong tops wurdle for my current favorite word game on the iPhone. It has this interesting twist where it presents a daily puzzle to you to beat. They get harder as the week goes on, and reset on Monday (kinda like the NYtimes crossword). Add in some little characters that challenge you to beat their high scores, and it adds dimension to the standard word game setup. I'm hoping for some more social features like online leader boards, etc.

      yup.

Well basically, its Boggle, but Boggle is awesome.

    Topple

    • Enable Flash to see this video

Topple is a great game... think reverse tetris. Your goal is to stack as many tetriminos as possible into a high tower. The higher you get, the less stable the tower becomes, and it starts to sway and buckle. You have to tilt the iPhone to keep everything upright and reach your goal.

Its the kind of game I really like to see on the iPhone, because it could really be made for another platform. It takes advantage of multitouch and the accelerometer in fun ways.

    Super Monkey Ball

    • Enable Flash to see this video

Something about this guys thumbs is really strange

Super Monkey ball was originally demod by sega at the press conference about the iPhone SDK. It looked damn impressive, and it still does. Top notch presentation, graphics and music.

What you should know about Super Monkey Ball is that it will make you HATE LIFE its the hardest game you have played since donkey kong. This is true in any of its incarnations on other platforms, not due to shortcomings with the tilt controls on the iphone which are quite good.

    Air Hockey

The best part is 2 player mode
